Many of our cars were written off by an insurer before we rebuilt them. That can sound worse than it is, so here is what it actually means, what has to happen before a car gets its plates back, and how you can check it for yourself.
When a repair quote is more than an insurer wants to pay, they write the car off, pay the owner out and sell the car on. That is all a repairable write-off is. It records what the insurer chose to spend. It says nothing about how well the car was repaired afterwards.
That part is on the people who rebuild it, and in Victoria it is checked by VicRoads before the car is allowed back on the road.
We only sell repairable write-offs. Statutory write-offs can never be registered again, so those go through our parts yard instead.
Every repairable write-off has to pass a Vehicle Identity Validation inspection at a VicRoads-approved centre before it can be registered. We book it, pay the $625.70 inspection fee and hand over the car with its file. The inspection happens without us in the room. The inspector checks the car's identity, the quality of the repair and every part against the paperwork:
Only when all of it passes does the car get its plates back. That file runs to 25 to 30 pages per car.
Priced below a clean-history car of the same age and kilometres. The saving comes from the label on the register, not from the condition of the car.
The write-off is on the car's record and on our listing, and we tell you before you ask. You will never find out later.
Rebuilt in our own workshop, inspected by VicRoads, covered by our warranty, and we are still here in Williamstown after you drive away.
